đź“‹ Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Label First

Before starting, write down your chick’s identifying info (e.g., breed, leg band color, etc.) in a list. Assign a number to each chick (1, 2, 3…) and make sure to match this with the sample you take.

2. Prepare Your Area

Work on a clean surface. Lay out your PCR tubes (lids open), ziplock bags, scissors, and sanitizer.

✅ What You’ll Need:

  • PCR tubes with attached lids

  • Scissors or nail trimmers

    (must be sanitized between

    birds)

  • Small ziplock bags

  • Alcohol wipes or sanitizer

  • Paper towel or napkin

  • Pen and notebook for

    tracking each sample

  • Small shipping box or

    padded envelope

3. Collect the Blood

Gently but firmly hold your chick. Trim just the tip of one toenail—enough to draw a couple small drops of blood.

Let the blood drip into the lid of the PCR tube (not the tube itself).

4. Secure the Sample

Close the lid tightly and place the PCR tube into a ziplock bag. Label the bag with the matching number (1, 2, 3…).

5. Sanitize Between Birds

Use an alcohol wipe or disinfectant to sanitize your scissors between each bird. Let them air dry before taking the next sample to prevent cross-contamination.

6. Pack Your Samples

Once all samples are collected, place the ziplock bags in a small box or padded envelope for mailing.
